9/11, ten years later, wow. The misses and I are sitting here watching news coverage “live” from 10 years ago on the History Channel. We remember it today like it was yesterday. We’re astonished by all the people that were just standing around as the misses says “like deer in the headlights”. We were saying to each other how we would have both run and kept on running even before the first tower fell. I don’t know if this is true or not because before 9/11 I’m not sure or not if we had the mentality of being prepared or always looking out for trouble. Looks like in one way the terrorists won as 9/11 changed the way most people view the World from that day forward. It’s too bad that we now live in a World where you have to worry about something like that happening.
On that day, the misses was up and I was still asleep. As soon as the first tower was hit she knew it was terrorism. This is not too surprising as when Tiger Woods came out and said he had an affair, she said “he’s a cheater and there’s a lot more women”. She’s pretty perceptive in that way, she has this 6th or 7th sense about certain things. Call it women’s intuition. I rushed down the stairs to see what she was talking about and we sat there, she 7 months pregnant and I watching in disbelief. This is one of those moments where everyone remembers where they were, kind of like JFK or Princess Di.
Here we are 10 years later living in a different World, it’ll never be the same. 2,973 people died that day and while the loss of life was horrific, the impact of the destruction in New York makes that number seem 10 times larger. No one ever imagined a bunch of guys in tents in the middle east could pull something like this off. Today I don’t know if we’ve made any progress, there still seems to be a divide between people and religions that runs so deep it’s like we’re headed for a religious war or something. I really don’t understand why people can’t just let people be. Or as was said before, live and let live. Let’s pray that nothing this tragic happens again and that people will somehow learn to understand other people. We have enough problems as it is such as the economy. Can’t we all just get along!
Now to yesterday, soccer won out. The little guy played well and it seems being another year older has done wonders for his game! Both boys wanted to use their own money to get these new scooters that were $55 each. Now this is a lot of money but it’s a lot better than a cheap toy from China or some candy. So after good behavior all day (a requirement) the oldest and I found the store where they were the least expensive (Wal Mart) and headed over and found the last two on the shelf. All the other kids in the neighborhood were envious and our boys took to them like ducks to water. The misses continued to work on her pirate ship which is now almost complete.
The boys are already outside on their scooters after eating breakfast. Lot’s of good football on today, whoo hoo. Next week I fly to Austin Texas on Wednesday at 10 am but will be back in Denver by 5pm the same day. I have a staff training (where I train 8 people on new wines they bought) for about an hour and then head right back to the airport. It’s hard to believe it’s almost the middle of September. We’ll all be in full Christmas mode about 90 days from now when it’ll be December 11th.
Well take care, have a great day and be thankful for all that you have. Too many people focus on what they don’t have which is a big waste of energy. Look around and take stock of the good things in your life, family, friends, your health coming to mind. Material things really don’t matter all that much now do they? After all, how much comfort do you really get from that big piece of jewelry? I mean I know it’s nice to have diamonds and gold but if it has no sentimental value, (of course anything any of you Grandma’s have, the misses considers extremely sentimental and will cherish for the rest of her life!) like being a gift from a loved one, what does it really mean to you? Just trying to put it all into perspective people, you need to decide for yourselves just what’s important to you. For me, it’s having a family as wonderful as the love of my life, my soulmate, best friend, my wife, and both my boys, and of course, all of you!
In closing, Grandma Annette has been really good about commenting via email lately and I just have to share her latest. Make sure you read the whole thing as it’s a great example of how our political representatives spin things in their favor. Check this out,
Judy Wallman, a professional genealogy researcher in southern California , was doing some personal work on her own family tree.. She discovered that Senator Harry Reid’s great-great uncle, Remus Reid, was hanged for horse stealing and train robbery in Montana , in 1889. Both Judy and Harry Reid share this common ancestor.
The only known photograph of Remus shows him standing on the gallows in Montana territory:
On the back of the picture Judy obtained during her research is this inscription: ‘Remus Reid, horse thief, sent to Montana Territorial Prison 1885, escaped 1887; robbed the Montana Flyer six times. Caught by Pinkerton detectives; convicted and hanged in 1889.’So Judy recently e-mailed Senator Harry Reid for information about their great-great uncle.
Believe it or not, Harry Reid’s staff sent back the following biographical sketch for her genealogy research:Â
“Remus Reid was a famous cowboy in the Montana Territory . His business empire grew to include acquisition of valuable equestrian assets and intimate dealings with the Montana railroad. Beginning in 1883, he devoted several years of his life to government service, finally taking leave to resume his dealings with the railroad. In 1887, he was a key player in a vital investigation run by the renowned Pinkerton Detective Agency. In 1889, Remus passed away during an important civic function held in his honor when the platform upon which he was standing collapsed.”
NOW THAT’s how it’s done, Folks! That’s real POLITICAL SPIN !!!
